You are not alone. There’s loads of confusing information out and to add to the confusion, there are so many serums to choose from! Think of the contradictions: Serums can be moisturisng, so how come you should still use a moisturiser?

Serums can be oil based but you have oily skin? Surely you should not apply oil to an oily skin?

It can be watery and so light; how can it possibly make a difference to the skin?

See what I mean…So many questions and we haven't even gotten to ingredient lists yet!

We’re de-bunking the myths and giving you the good stuff in a quick to read guide.

So, just what exactly is serum?
Serum is a skincare product that you apply to your skin after cleansing and toning and before your moisturiser, with the intent of delivering, effective, powerful ingredients directly into the skin. Serum is particularly suited to this task because it is made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients. This makes them the perfect product for targeting specific skincare concerns, like wrinkles, pigmentation or just simply to keep your skin glowing and radiant.

Is serum a moisturiser?
Yes and no. Serums can include wonderful moisturising ingredients (for example, hyaluronic acid) to help skin retain moisture, but that doesn't make them moisturisers in the traditional sense. Moisturising lotions and creams are richer in butters and non-comedogenic oils to nourish and hydrate the upper layers of the skin and create a protective barrier on the epidermis to protect the skin and keep all the good stuff your serum provides in the skin.

How often should I use my serum?
For best results, our serums should be used mornings and evenings and if you are using a derma roller, directly after rolling.

Can I use an oil based serum even if my skin is oily?
Good question. Traditional serums are water based but now, there is a growing trend for oil based serums as they provide an abundance of benefits. Our Banish and Repair serum, formulated especially for acne prone/problematic skin feeds the skin with the correct amount of amino and fatty acids which helps to stabilise the over production of sebum (skin oil). The oils we include in our Gorgeous serums are cold pressed, organic oils that are easily absorbed into the skin. Because our products are not diluted down with emulsifiers, fillers and other synthetic ingredients, you don’t need to pile it on. Just a couple of drops is all you need.

So if an oil based serum is so good, why have a water based serum?

The molecular structure of a water based serum is much lighter than an oil which means that it can better penetrate the skin. There are also several ingredients that perform better when blended into lighter formula;  take L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) for instance. Vitamin C is a fantastic ingredient that plays a vital role in the synthesis of collagen production, so adding Vitamin C to the skin as an anti-ageing ingredient is ideal. L-Ascobic Acid however can be quite unstable and loses efficacy quickly, particularly if it is blended with strong competing ingredients. What you want is to ensure this fabulous ingredient penetrates deep into the layers of the skin and work its magic.  You could then follow this light water based serum with an oil based for additional skin goal benefits or seal in all the goodness with your moisturiser.

What about essence? Is essence serum?
Essentially. Based on where they come in the routine (after cleansing, before moisturising) and what function they serve (targeted skincare needs besides simple hydration) serums and essences are very similar. If anything, they differ in texture; for example, our Aloe Serum (which is brilliant for sensitive

Don't serum expire really fast?
Certain potent ingredients often found in serum can become unstable once they come in contact with air. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), for instance, can oxidize and lose efficacy over time. But thanks to our on-point technology, the last longer so they can do your skin more good. Best rule of thumb is to store your serum in a cool, dry place and use it up within six months to a year.
